Loved the proximity to San Antonio. Remembering the days as a recruit in basuck training (yes its spelled right) when it was so hot we had to wear a Pith helmet, there was no air conditioning in the barracks. Later as an officer with air conditioning, living was better especially having my own room.

Near the Air National Guard section is an equestrian stable, a first for a base that I've seen. While it doesn't provide horses for rent, accommodations are available for those who want a place to keep their personally-owned horses.

Outdoor recreation has a paintball area available, as well as a disc golf course. Not only is RV parking available near the hospital (ideal for traveling retirees), outdoor rec also rents RV trailers.

My husband and I attended basic here in 2006. Changed my life for the better. We will be moving here soon! I can't wait!

While a large portion of the base is dedicated to basic training and tech schools, the base is still a functioning air base so you can regularly see F-16 fighters from the Air National Guard flying around, as well C-5 cargo planes.

Finally, of note, the hospital has lots of parking available, if you don't mind a five minute walk. While parking is provided near the main entrance, it is nearly always crowded. However, on the back side of the hospital is a parking garage that has never been full when I visit. Once you get past the first few rows, there are many empty spaces available. From the garage, it is just a few minutes walking to the admin spaces entrance, but there is an information desk right inside that can easily direct you to your destination.

Lakeland Air Force base is an amazing place to visit, there's so much to do. August weather is in the 100's. Dress casual because your Airman don't care if you are in shirts & t-shirt. Bring a sun hat and paper fan or small towel.

The base has the usual exchange and commissary, as well as an 18 hole golf course. There are several miles of trails that cover the base, especially in the area of Security Hill. These are great for walking or running, as they vary in steepness due to the hills and rivers. As they are near the rivers and trees, they are also useful for nature watching.

Scattered around the base are a number of static airplane displays, with plaques describing the plane. These are great for those interested in the history of aviation or planes in general.

Lackland AFB is the only basic training location for the US Air Force. It actually consists of a number of bases in San Antonio that were consolidated during a BRAC.

Been here twice once for my brother then my son graduation I am on my way once again for my baby girl graduation! Its a very nice place!
